Know WWI: The Great War's History and Legacy

Event Type: Adult Program
Age Group(s): Adult
Date: 8/11/2014
Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Time: 7:15 PM
Description:
Although WWII proved to be more brutal and much more costly in terms of both human and material losses, WWI was the first “total war”—a war that went down in history as the Great War.

Alexander Kashirin, an instructor in the history department at University of Oregon and a scholar of WWI, will lead an engaging exploration of the causes of the war, the reasons why it turned into a global conflagration, and the impact it had on various segments of society—soldiers, home front industrial workers, civilians, revolutionaries, colonials and more. The presentation will specifically highlight the challenges of prosecuting the war in the East and the West and will culminate in a brief discussion of whether the Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty or merely “an armistice for 20 years,” as Marshal Ferdinand Foch predicted.
