Beliefs in spirits and other related intangible beings are prevalent cross-culturally. However, the specific forms, actions, behaviors, and contexts of these beings vary greatly across culture. In this lecture, Professor Amy Harper explores some of the ways in which spiritual beings are variously imaged. By placing these dynamic and diverse beliefs within specific cultural contexts, we will explore the ways in which spirits provide insight into the diverse ways in which human groups understand who we are in relation to each other and to our shifting environments.
