OSU Master Gardener, Deborah Goodall, shares tips and techniques for making your garden bloom.

Central Oregonians have one of the most challenging gardening climates in the United States. That doesn’t mean we can’t create beautiful gardens with diverse plants or grow a variety of fruits and vegetables, but it does mean we have to be informed, purposeful and creative. Understanding how our climate impacts our efforts as gardeners is critical to our success and pleasure in planting and watching our gardens grow.

Temperature, precipitation, elevation, microclimates, and soil all play major roles in Central Oregon gardening. This introductory discussion of these climate factors will prepare you for the challenges you’ll encounter planning and tending your home landscape or vegetable plot. Whether you’re a novice gardener or a seasoned one transplanted from a different climate, you will benefit from the information presented – and handouts from the Oregon State University Extension Service.


Presenter Bio
Deb Goodall earned her OSU Master Gardener certification last year but has maintained gardens for over 40 years in a variety of climates: Denver, Colorado; Tacoma, Washington; and Kansas City, Missouri. After moving to Bend, she realized she needed to learn more about our unique High Desert gardening challenges and enrolled in the Master Gardener program. She coordinates a team of volunteers that tends Libby’s Garden in downtown Bend.
