Downtown Bend: Wound and Bloom - Poetry Workshop with Judy Montgomery

Judy Montgomery Event Type: Adult Program
Age Group(s): Adult
Date: 1/6/2018
Start Time: 9:30 AM
End Time: 1:00 PM
Description:
Explore both bloom and wound (physical, spiritual, personal, social) as fertile ground for poetry.

"If you have no wounds, how can you know if you’re alive?" asks one of Edward Albee’s characters. And yet, braided as tightly together as strands of DNA, there is a radiance - a recognition, in life and art - of healing and celebration. Joseph Campbell says "The real artist is the one who has learned to recognize and to render what Joyce has called the 'radiance' of all things . . .. ."

Join Judy Montgomery for a morning of exploring both bloom and wound (physical, spiritual, personal, social) as fertile ground for poetry. What have you lost? How deep is an injury? How can injury open a door to blooming? We’ll unfold poems by Vivian Wagner, Gregory Orr, Rita Dove, Bob Hickok, and others to see what they can teach us. Then we’ll “freewrite” and (optional!) share our drafts in response to discussion and prompts. Please bring a sack lunch so we can keep going while our fertile imaginations seize the wheel!

Judith Montgomery lives in Bend, Oregon, where she writes and tries to keep deer from eating her geraniums. She loves to teach and talk about poetry. Her poems appear in Valparaiso Poetry Review, Prairie Schooner, the American Journal of Nursing, and Healing Muse, among other journals, as well as in a number of anthologies. Her first collection, Passion, received the 2000 Oregon Book Award for Poetry; Red Jess, a finalist for several national book awards, appeared in 2006; and a chapbook, Pulse & Constellation in 2007. Her new manuscript, Litany for Bloom and Wound, has been assisted through residencies at Playa, and was a finalist for the 2016 Marsh Hawk Poetry Prize.
