Explore the history of undocumented workers in the U.S.

Why are there so many Mexican immigrants in the United States, and why are so many of them undocumented? In this talk, Julie M. Weise, an Associate Professor of History at the University of Oregon, will help us answer this question. Her presentation will discuss the history of Mexican immigration to the United States, the “push” and “pull” factors that have brought so many here, and legal changes that have left so many vulnerable to deportation. She will also be happy to engage in conversation about the Trump administration’s policies towards Mexico and Mexican immigration.

Weise received her Ph.D from Yale University and has been at UO since 2013. Her first book, Corazón de Dixie: Mexicanos in the U.S. South since 1910 won the 2015 Merle Curti Award for the best book in U.S. social history from the Organization of American Historians. Before and during graduate school, she worked for Mexican President Vicente Fox’s cabinet-level Office of the President for Mexicans Living Abroad as well as for immigrants’ rights organizations in Los Angeles and New Haven.
