Keith Snodgrass Event Type: Adult Program
Age Group(s): Adult
Date: 4/28/2018
Start Time: 12:00 PM
End Time: 1:00 PM
Description:
Consider how British partition of India came about and how it continues to resonate even 70 years later.

This presentation looks at the way the British colonial period in India created conditions which made the idea of a single independent India, and the many ideas of different ways of dividing it, plausible.

Keith Snodgrass is the Managing Director and Outreach Coordinator at the South Asia Center at the University of Washington. During his presentation he will describe how colonial policies utilized ethnic, religious, and other identities, and how some of these policies contributed to the way independence eventually took place. He will then discuss some of the long term effects of the partitioning of British India into the independent states of India and Pakistan.

Snodgrass has written for "Education About Asia," taught courses and media in South Asia, and given presentations on this and many other topics to audiences around the Pacific Northwest.
