Library: La Pine Public LibraryOpals are spectacular gemstones that come in a variety of colors that can rival diamonds, rubies, and emeralds in intensity. But not all opals are of gemstone quality. Many opals lack the brilliant color and "fire" of gemstones, but occur much more frequently. You probably encounter opals everyday in central Oregon, without knowing it! Join the Deschutes Public Library and geologist Daniele Mckay to learn more about these intriguing gemstones. We will explore how opals form, and where to find gemstone quality opals in Oregon. ___________________ Links to more information about rock hounding in Oregon: U.S. Forest Service: https://www.fs.usda.gov/wps/portal/fsinternet/cs/detail/!ut/p/z0/04_Sj9CPykssy0xPLMnMz0vMAfIjo8zijQwgwNHCwN_DI8zPyBcqYKBfkO2oCABZcx5g/?position=Not&ss=110601&navtype=&pnavid=110000000000000&navid=110370000000000&cid=stelprdb5247398 Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries: http://www.oregongeology.org/sub/learnmore/rockhoundResources.htm BLM Oregon Sunstone Collection Site: https://www.blm.gov/or/resources/recreation/files/brochures/sunstone_rec_brochure.pdf ___________________ *cr* *cr* Location: Community Room Contact: Paige M.
