Sisters: Know Water - Beginning Watercolor Techniques

 Ever wanted to try watercolor? Local artist Judy Hoiness shares the basics.

If you ever wanted to try watercolor but were hesitant due to cost of art supplies this is the class for you. All of your paint, paper and brushes will be supplied and go home with you.

Introduction to the basic techniques of watercolor include how to apply the paint, load the palette, tape the paper, manipulate the brushes (flat and round) and the techniques of laying down line and areas of color called washes. Instructor will demonstrate each technique then the class will practice.


Supply List:

Support for paper can be a small drawing board, small sheet of foam core board, heavy cardboard with some waterproofing or perhaps plastic on top. Support should be Approximately 12x12” or larger.

Containers for water. (2)

Palette may be a white plate, freezer paper, old tray covered with freezer paper. You may bring a watercolor palette if you have one.

Pencil

If you have blue painter’s tape bring it. We will have some for the class.

For the items listed above please recycle, or borrow if possible. There is no need to buy any item.

Judy Hoiness is a fourth generation Oregonian living in Bend for the last 48 years. Central Oregon and the Pacific Northwest have been a major inspiration for her work. She has been painting and exhibiting since 1967. Judy graduated from Portland State University in Art Education and obtained a Master’s Degree in Illustration from Syracuse University. Her work has been exhibited in numerous national and regional exhibitions throughout the United States. Judy's work has been published in seven books about watercolor and acrylic and in the Watercolor Magazine. She has taught workshops in the United States and Canada and is a retired Adjunct Art faculty from Central Oregon Community College. She is a juried member of The National Watercolor Society and for the last several years, I have been working with mixed media on paper, textile and canvas.
