Description:
The Russian Revolution 101: the anniversary and today's impact.

The Russian Revolution 101: a close encounter with the Russian Revolution, just over 100 years after this major historical event. Dr. Leah Goldman from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon explores the social, political, and economic factors that provided fertile ground for violent change, then detail the Revolution's progress from labor strike to democratic insurgency to Bolshevik coup.

Dr. Goldman will analyze the role of workers, women, and other underrepresented groups in driving the Revolution forward. Further, she will also explore the consequences of seven years of upheaval--comprising World War I, the Revolution itself, and the ensuing Civil War--for Russian society, as well as the impact of avant-garde social and cultural experiments in shaping post-Revolutionary ways of life. Finally, Dr. Goldman will analyze the legacy of the Revolution in post-Soviet Russia and share her thoughts on how deeper knowledge of the Russian Revolution can help us understand Russia as a global power today.

Leah Goldman is a Lecturer in History at Lewis & Clark College and a Visiting Scholar in History at Reed College. Dr. Goldman is a cultural historian of the Soviet Union, and her research investigates the connections between cultural production and state authority in the Soviet Union through the lens of classical music censorship. Dr. Goldman has presented her research at conferences throughout the United States, Russia, and Europe. She has also won several awards, including a Fulbright-Hays Grant, published widely, and is currently writing a monograph titled Creative Comrades: Censorship and Collaboration in Late-Stalinist Music. Dr. Goldman lives in Portland with her partner, two cats, and very excitable dog. She especially enjoys sharing her historical knowledge with the public.
