Description:
Explore the transformation of Russia under Putin.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia’s political, economic and social transformation has been uneven and incomplete. After a decade of political and economic upheaval under President Boris Yeltsin, Vladimir Putin promised to restore Russia’s power, both domestically as well as on the world stage. This talk discusses how President Putin has transformed Russia’s political and economic systems and reasserted the country’s presence on the world stage since coming to power in 2000. In closing, we explore the implications of a more authoritarian and assertive Russia for global politics.

Sarah L. Henderson is an associate professor of Political Science in the School of Public Policy at Oregon State University. She teaches courses on Russian politics as well as more general ones on international affairs. She is the author of the books Building Democracy in Contemporary Russia, Women and Politics in a Global World in addition to a number of articles and book chapters. She became interested in Russian politics when she was a high school student and lived in East Berlin, crossing the Berlin Wall daily to attend to school. Thus began a lifelong interest in Russian studies, with a focus on Russian politics.
