Description:
Examine Stalin’s legacy and what we can learn from his brand of authoritarianism.

This talk will trace how a young Georgian from a poor family who once studied at a seminary rose through the Bolshevik ranks to become the leader of the Soviet Union. It will examine Stalin’s role in collectivizing agriculture and industrializing the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 1930s, as well as his policies during and immediately after the Second World War. The talk will analyze how Cold War tensions developed between the Allies in the immediate postwar years, as well as investigate Stalin’s death and the ensuing process of de-Stalinizaton. In closing, Dr. Holzman will offer her thoughts on Stalin’s legacy in Russia today and what we can learn from his brand of authoritarianism.
