Central Oregon played host to astronauts preparing for the first lunar landing in the 1960s.

During the 1960s, Oregon played an important role in the Space Race as a training ground for astronauts preparing for the first lunar landing. Many geologists thought that Central Oregonís landscape and rocks resembled that of the Moon, making it an ideal training spot for astronauts to test gear and develop skills navigating challenging terrain.

In this talk, Laura Ferguson, the Curator of Western History at the High Desert Museum, explores the role Central Oregon played in the space program, as well as highlights what life was like for those living in Bend at the time.
