Gwinup is a native of Bend Oregon and began his musical life on the piano at the age of five. As a student at Southern Oregon University his focus turned to the guitar. At SOU Matt performed as much as possible, both solo and with various school groups and took part in masterclasses. He has been performing and teaching since his 2007 graduation.

In 2011, Matt moved back to his home town of Bend where he teaches and performs in Central Oregon. He currently teaches out of his private guitar studio located in the south side of Bend. Matt continues to perform in Central Oregon and beyond both as a soloist and with the Oregon Guitar Trio, cover band Toothpick Shaker, and Irish band Five Pint Mary.
