Explore the history and spend time with some local typewriters of note. Empowering Clerks will be on hand to issue Joy Permits and other Playful Paperwork.

First commercially produced in 1874, typewriters did not be become common until the mid-1880s. Typewriters have since been replaced by computers but in their heyday they were indispensable tools in homes, offices, and classrooms for almost all written communication.

During the presentation Kelly Cannon-Miller will highlight the history of typewriters while showcasing typewriters of local historic significance. A selection of typewriters will be on display and two Empowering Clerks will be on hand to use the typewriters to issue a variety of Playful Paperwork including Joy Permits and the Forgiver's License. If you have a special typewriter in your life, please feel free to bring it along for the event.

Kelly Cannon-Miller is the Executive Director for the Deschutes Historical Museum located in Historic Reid School.

Heather has passionately intertwined herself in the Central Oregon community for the last 16 years. She lives by a DIY ethic and has a thousand hobbies including chicken-keeping, skateboarding, zine-making, spelunking and pondering the purpose of life. She loves all things analogue, and was born in that unique era where she can both change the ribbon in a typewriter and manage multiple electronic devices.

Teafly Peterson is a multi-faceted artist living and working in Central Oregon. Her illustrative and written work has been featured in a variety of local publications. She often creates interactive, community-based art pieces that allow people to engage with what she is creating. In the past, she has created a number of special community based projects including large 8-foot tall puppets for The Environmental Center, a traveling photo exhibition for the Human Dignity Coalition and spoken word pieces for the World Muse Conference. She is also a collaborator in Ori Alon’s social practice art piece The Center For Supportive Bureaucracy where they create satirical and reflective paper work that is shared via a live, interactive performance. She has lived in Bend for 1/3 of her life and she says it that way, because it makes her feel both young and old at the same time.
