Joel Clements  Event Type: Adult Program
Age Group(s): Adult
Date: 1/15/2020
Start Time: 6:30 PM
End Time: 8:00 PM
Description:
Toast the great works of the 1920s. Costumes encouraged. 21+.

Come have a drink and look back a hundred years at one of the biggest cultural shifts in western history at Gompers Distillery located at 611 NE Jackpine Ct #8 in Redmond.

The early 20th century and the 1920’s were an exciting, tumultuous time of change: changes in culture, in rights, in philosophy, and in the arts. As technology lit up the world and connected it in new ways, people suddenly found themselves more disconnected than ever, but why? And how did literature and the arts reflect the wild experiences of that time?

If you’ve ever been fascinated with that era, the Lost Generation and the expatriates, with existentialism, or with the seemingly sudden rise of modernism, you won’t want to miss this conversation!

Light tastings of Gompers Distillery Spirits will be served, with cocktails available for purchase.

Joel Clements has an M.A in modernist and post-colonial literature, and teaches here in Bend. He has taught modernist courses for Bend-LaPine schools, COCC, and OSU-Cascades. He has also led numerous seminars for the Deschutes Library lecture series, including a piece on The Great Gatsby and Amor Towles’ "The Rules of Civility" for the Novel Idea series.
