Description:
Observe the art of Japanese flower arranging.

Learn about Japanese and Japanese-American history and culture through a live ikebana demonstration in the style of the Toin Misho school. Ikebana is the ancient Japanese art of flower arranging that dates back to the 7th century. There are many schools of ikebana, each school emphasizes their own set of rules and philosophy. The demonstration will cover the fundamentals of ikebana and will feature material found in Central Oregon to highlight how this art form serves as a bridge for cross-cultural understanding.

Rachel Alm began practicing ikebana in the style of the Toin Misho school at the age of 7 while attending Josui Gakuin, a small Japanese language and culture school in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Toin Misho school was established in Kalihi, Hawaii during the 1970s and is a branch of the Misho School, which was founded in 1807 in Osaka, Japan. She received an advanced certificate in ikebana at the age of 12 after exhibiting her work in Honolulu City Hall. Rachel currently lives in Central Oregon and her style has evolved to adapt her formal ikebana training to capture the unique beauty of the high desert landscape.
