Local authors discuss story, arc, and plots across genres.

Are you a plotter, or a pantser? Do you craft each story according to a detailed outline, or do you "fly by the seat of your pants" and let the story take you where it will? Discover the benefits of each method, and how to take your writing to the next level. Hear how to craft that perfectly plotted story from local award-winning authors specializing in YA writing, fiction, mystery, and romance.

Kim Cooper Findling will share: basic plot structure and key points; tenets of a good YA story-line; how to balance dialogue, action and pacing; and how to keep up momentum to see your story through from beginning to end.

Sarah Smith will discuss romance tropes popular with readers, share tips and tricks for how to hook readers, and reveal her go-to plot-outline formula.

Kathleen Valenti will discuss how to use plot-crafting techniques to create suspense-filled page-turners.

Fifth-generation Oregonian Kim Cooper Findling is the editor of Bend Magazine and the publisher of Dancing Moon Press. She is the author of The Sixth Storm, with Libby Findling; Day Trips to the Oregon Coast: Getaway Ideas for the Local Traveler; Bend, Oregon Daycations: Day Trips for Curious Families; Day Trips from Portland: Getaway Ideas for the Local Traveler; and Chance of Sun: An Oregon Memoir. She lives in Bend, Oregon with her husband, three children and two cats. See kimcooperfindling.com and dancingmoonpress.com.

Sarah Smith is a copywriter-turned-author who wants to make the world a lovelier place, one kissing story at a time. Her love of romance began when she was eight and she discovered her auntie's stash of romance novels. She's been hooked ever since. When she's not writing, you can find her hiking, eating chocolate, and perfecting her lumpia recipe. She lives in Bend, Oregon, with her husband and adorable cat, Salem.

Kathleen Valenti is the author of the Maggie O’Malley books, a medical mystery series that includes her Agatha- and Lefty-nominated debut novel, Protocol. When Kathleen isn’t writing mysteries that combine humor and suspense, she works as a nationally award-winning copywriter. She has lived in Bend since 1975, is a Mountain View High School graduate, and pretends to enjoy running.

This will be a hands-on, discussion-based presentation with visual slides and handouts. Look for a Zoom link after May 19.
