Learn what four years of beekeeping has taught Oregon Master Beekeeper and president of the Portland Urban Beekeepers club, Cheryl Wright. She'll discuss some of the unexpected aspects of beekeeping including diseases, swarming, and what goes into a beekeeping season.

Cheryl Wright has been a beekeeper for "only" four years. She is currently the president of the Portland Urban Beekeepers bee club, and is currently approaching her 2nd year at the Master level of the Oregon Master Beekeeping program. She started her beekeeping adventures by reading Dewey Caron’s book, Honey Bee Biology and Beekeeping (2013) twice over, and attending monthly Portland Urban Beekeeping meetings. The more she learned about beekeeping the less sure she was that this was a viable hobby. To learn more, she signed up for the Oregon Master Beekeeping (OMB) Program. After a year of serious exploration and study, she purchased her equipment and three small 5-frame beehives, called "nucs". Additionally, she was awarded a box of bees through a PUB scholarship for the OMB program. She has made progress, and maintains between two to six hives on her back deck.

In real life, to support her bee obsession, she works as a nurse practitioner for United Health Group performing in-home health risk assessments for Medicare recipients.
