Go on a lively tour of historical traditions of magic with University of Oregon Professor and medievalist, Martha Bayless, Ph.D.

This lively presentation will cover historical traditions of magic, including some that may be familiar from Harry Potter and some that are still with us in modern life. Among these is the surprising history of Hallowe’en— almost certainly not what you’ve heard in the media! — as well as answers to questions like why cats and not dogs were supposed to conspire with witches, why shoes are associated with weddings, and why we throw coins in fountains.

Martha Bayless is a medievalist who specializes in the popular culture of the Middle Ages. She has a PhD from Cambridge University and is Professor of English and Director of Folklore and Public Culture at the University of Oregon.
