The glaciers of the Oregon Cascades are crucial for downstream life, supplying much needed water during the late summer for irrigation, drinking and fish survival. We look at the U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps and believe we know where Oregon’s glaciers are and how many exist. But this is not the case. Dr. Anders Carlson will discuss new findings by the Oregon Glaciers Institute’s first comprehensive census of glaciers in Oregon. Much mystery remains in the high Cascades that arises from a near complete lack of study since the 1930s. Many glaciers are now gone. Others existed and vanished in our lifetime without any mention on a map or report. And even a new glacier was discovered. Dr. Carlson will show how these mysteries actually make sense and the true mystery was their apparent absence.

Dr. Anders Carlson fell in love with glaciers as an undergraduate student while conducting research at Matanuska Glacier in Alaska. After receiving his B.A. in Geology and German from Augustana College, IL, he earned a M.S. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Ph.D. at Oregon State University in glacial geology. Following a postdoc at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, MA, he was a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and then Oregon State University before co-founding the Oregon Glaciers Institute. Anders has studied glacier-climate change for 20+ years in the United States, Canada, Greenland, Svalbard, Scandinavia, Patagonia and Antarctica, with a new focus on the glaciers of the Pacific Northwest.
