Explore recent discoveries and remaining mysteries of Aztec hieroglyphs.

The independent development of strikingly unique writing systems in human history can be found in three regions of the world: the Near East, China, and Mesoamerica. Stephanie Wood (University of Oregon) is a specialist in Mesoamerican ethnohistory. She has been studying Aztec manuscripts ("codices") and the Aztec language since 1978, and she edits an online Nahuatl dictionary that has 100,000+ users around the globe. In 2017, she teamed up with colleagues in Germany, Spain, and Mexico to create an online, annotated collection of Aztec hieroglyphs. These glyphs open a wonderful window onto culture. Some are humorous, some are wonderfully complex, and some are still a mystery. Dr. Wood's slide presentation will share recent discoveries and remaining puzzles imbedded in this unique graphic communication system.

Dr. Stephanie Wood is the director of the Wired Humanities Projects at University of Oregon. She earned both her Ph.D. and M.A. at UCLA.
