Downtown Bend: Writers Writing - Writing & Resilience: HIIT for the Heart

Emily Carr Event Type: Adult Program
Age Group(s): Adult
Date: 3/9/2023
Start Time: 5:30 PM
End Time: 7:30 PM
Description:
Explore how to use writing to work through intense emotions.

This is an in-person program. Registration is required. Masks are optional at all in-person library events.

In this high-intensity-interval-training-style workshop, Dr. Emily Carr will share some TOP SECRET tips and tricks for processing stress and other negative feelings. High intensity interval training (HIIT) isn’t just for our glutes, our core, or our cardiovascular fitness. HIIT is great for our FEELINGS, too - and can help us to express and process negative emotions like anger, grief, fear, frustration, anxiety, etc. in quick bursts. And, whether you use your imagination to write poems, advise investors, or build houses, it helps to WORK YOUR EMOTIONS OUT. Because the heart is a muscle, and so is the mind!

Dr. Emily Carr originally designed this workshop for NEXT Sessions on Leadership, and used it to help women leaders in American banking process stress. So you do not need to identify as a writer or be embarked on a specific writing project to participate--though that helps, of course!

During our time together, Dr. Carr will introduce you to the concept of HIIT for the heart, you’ll learn about mental and emotional resilience from master trainer Octavia Butler, we’ll complete some writing intervals together and reflect on our experience, and Dr. Carr will end by sharing some pro tips and tricks for using HIIT for the heart whenever you are feeling emotionally OVERWHELMED and/or stuck in a negative mind loop and need some help refocusing.

Emily Carr writes murder mysteries that turn into love poems that are sometimes (by her McSweeney's editors, for example) called divorce poems. After she got an MFA in poetry from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, she took a doctorate in ecopoetics at the University of Calgary. These days, she's Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at the New College of Florida. Her McSweeney's collection, "whosoever has let a minotaur enter them, or a sonnet--," inspired a beer of the same name, now available at the Ale Apothecary. Emily's Tarot Romance, Name Your Bird Without A Gun, is now available from Spork.
