Let's Talk Books: "In the Garden of Beasts" by Erik Larson

When: Thursday, June 06, 2013 - 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Where: Langley Library

The time is 1933, the place, Berlin, when mild-mannered professor William E. Dodd becomes America’s first ambassador to Hitler’s Germany. His daughter Martha is at first entranced by the parties and pomp, and the handsome young men of the Third Reich with their infectious enthusiasm for their country. But as evidence of Jewish persecution mounts, confirmed by chilling first-person testimony, her father telegraphs his concerns to a largely indifferent State Department back home. Dodd watches with alarm as Jews are attacked, the press is censored, and frightening new laws are set in place. As that first year unfolds and the shadows deepen, the Dodds experience days full of excitement, intrigue, romance—and ultimately, horror, when a climactic spasm of violence and murder reveals Hitler’s true character and ruthless ambition.

Saturday Book Brunch: “Holes”

When: Saturday, June 08, 2013 - 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Where: Langley Library

A book club with discussion, activities and food for older elementary and middle school students. Today's book is Holes by Louis Sachar. Stanley Yelnats is under a curse and now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys' detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the warden makes the boys "build character" by spending all day, every day, digging holes. There's more than character improvement going on at Camp Green Lake. Stanley tries to dig up the truth in this other: inventive and darkly humorous tale of crime and punishment—and redemption.
