This one-woman show portrays Deborah Sampson, the first woman to fight and be honorably discharged from the American Military. An indentured servant by age five, Deborah grew up in a man’s world, where women were naught but second-class subjects. In the final years of the War for Independence, this rebel tied back her hair, bound her chest, and enlisted as “Robert Shurtlieff.” A West Point-trained marksman, Deborah’s combat campaign spanned the Hudson River Valley. Note: This program covers the integral French-American alliance, especially when examining the survival of the American people and the emergence of the United States as a sovereign nation.
