Event Type: Adult Program Date: 9/19/2015 Start Time: 10:30 AM End Time: 12:30 PM Description: Sponsored by the FRIENDS of the Somers Library. Presented by Shanyn Siegel, who is the former collection curator of Seed Savers Exchange and the editor of "The Seed Garden:The Art and Practice of Seed Saving".
This class demonstrates techniques for cleaning seeds using common household materials. A little neglect in the garden often leads to an unexpected seed crop. When collected and handled properly, garden-grown seeds can be stored for use in future seasons—and expected to remain viable for several to many years. This workshop guides novice seed savers, whether intentional seed savers or opportunistic gardeners, to properly bring in the seed harvest. Topics include: •Ripeness indicators and how to best gauge seed maturity. •Comparison of once-over and staggered harvesting •Difference of harvesting dry-fruited and fleshy-fruited crops •Wet-processing, threshing, screening, and winnowing will be demonstrated The information presented is applicable to vegetable crops, garden ornamentals, and native plants. Participants will leave with a packet of seeds grown in the instructor's garden. Please register for this free presentation Location: Library Program Room Presenter: Shanyn Siegel Status: Closed |
