Event Type: Adults
Date: 5/23/2017
Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Time: 8:00 PM
The second installment of the BioCafe series, presented in collaboration with the University of Illinois School of Molecular and Cellular Biology, features Dr. Steven R. Blanke, Professor of Microbiology, discussing "Fantastic Microbes and Where to Find Them: Unexpected Ways the Hidden World of Microorganisms Affects our Health and Well-Being."

We live in a world where microorganisms are considered warily as
mysterious, invisible creatures, most often linked to human sickness and disease. However the vast majority of microbes are not dangerous, and many contribute to human health in complex and unexpected ways. In our own bodies, the human-microbe distinction has become blurred, as microbial cells outnumber our own cells, and more importantly, contribute novel functions important to our well-being. Upon leaving this discussion, you will have a completely new view of humans and their microbes, as well as exciting new ways that microbes could be used for personalized medicine.
