After considering the vital role of the national forest's timber resources in sustaining Bend's timber-based economy for more than half a century, the contributions of it's water, forage, wildlife, recreation, and wilderness resources and their stewardship by the U.S. Forest Service and citizens are surveyed.=0D=0A=0D=0ALes Joslin is regionally and nationally recognized wilderness educator and recipient of the U.S. Forest Service Chief's Wilderness Education Leadership Award. A retired U.S. Navy commander and a former U.S. Forest Service firefighter, wilderness ranger and staff officer, he is a graduate of San Jose State College and holds master's degrees from the University of Colorado and the University of London. He served fourteen seasons in the Three Sisters Wilderness.
