Event Type: Adult Program Age Group(s): Adult Date: 5/15/2017 Start Time: 5:30 PM End Time: 7:15 PM Description: During this generative workshop, Dr. Emily Carr of OSU-Cascades helps you explore in-depth a fantastical world of your own creation. With examples by masters of the impossible like George Saunders, Ursula K Le Guin, Italo Calvino, and Kelly Link as guides, you will discover practical tools for creating alternate realities—whether you write in poetry or prose. Together, we will try out some strategies like convincing emotional detail, frontloading strangeness, the fine art of omission, and juxtaposing imaginary and realistic detail. This workshop is ideal for the curious and creative and open to writers of all genres and skill levels.
Library: Downtown Bend Public LibraryEmily Carr has said she "writes murder mysteries that turn into love poems that are sometimes ... called divorce poems." She has lived all over the world and is the author of several collections and chapbooks of poems. She earned an MFA in poetry from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, and a doctorate in ecopoetics at the University of Calgary. She is the program director of the low-residency MFA in creative writing at Oregon State University-Cascades. *cr* Location: Brooks Room Contact: Liz Goodrich Contact Number: 541-312-1032 Presenter: Emily Carr Status: Waiting List |
