Description:
Community Librarian Chandra vanEijnsbergen delves into our love of horror.

Do you love horror stories? Have you ever wondered why? Do people look at you oddly when you tell them your favorite book is The Shining or Feed? Well, you’re not alone. And you’re not weird. There are good reasons we are drawn to the monstrous and terrifying. When Stephen King was asked why he would want to make up horrible things when there is so much real horror in the world, he said “we make up horror to help us cope with the real ones”. (Danse Macabre, 1987). Reading horror may not just be normal, it may actually be beneficial. Join us for a talk about the meaning and importance of horror books and come away with a list of terrifyingly wonderful books to read.

Chandra vanEijnsbergen has worked for Deschutes Public Library for eighteen years and is currently the Community Librarian at the East Bend Library. She has loved horror books and movies for as long as she can remember. Chandra blames her love of the terrifying on her father, who read her the original Grimm’s Fairy tales as a child.
