Downtown Bend: Writers Working - Writing & Love Affairs

Event Type: Adult Program
Age Group(s): Adult
Date: 7/23/2019
Start Time: 5:30 PM
End Time: 7:30 PM
Description:
Explore beginning your writing with courage and curiosity with Dr. Emily Carr.

“To write is to encounter a love affair. To begin is to admit an infatuation, a longing, a love… The middle is about the despair of ending, the fear that love will go unrequited. The ending says I might have loved you once, but things have changed between us; things are different now. The ending says it’s not you, it’s me.” ~ Jenny Boully

Jenny Boully likens writing to a love affair, often the one-sided kind. She sees the beginning as the moment of falling in love: commitment, obsession, spontaneity, risk, the thrill of matchmaking. In this mixed-genre workshop, we will examine, experience, and experiment with a variety of ways to begin (anything). Together, we will write, read, reflect upon, and live a series of beginnings. Together, we will increase our curiosity (and decrease our fear) of beginning.

Emily Carr says she "writes murder mysteries that turn into love poems that are sometimes (by her McSweeney's editors, for example) called divorce poems." She has lived all over the world and is the author of several collections and chapbooks of poems. After she got an MFA in poetry from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, she took a doctorate in ecopoetics at the University of Calgary. These days, she's the program director of the low-residency MFA in creative writing at Oregon State University-Cascades. Her newest book, Whosoever Has Let a Minotaur Enter Them, Or a Sonnet—, is available from McSweeney's. It inspired a beer of the same name, now available at the Ale Apothecary. You can find her online at www.ifshedrawsadoor.com/ and as ifshedrawsadoor on Instagram.
