OSU Cascades Low-Residency MFA professors Beth Alvarado and Ellen Santasiero discuss memoir and how they write and teach it.

Hear about: some of their favorite works, how you go about writing memoir, where to start, why memoir is important, and what they are telling their students about writing memoir right now.

Beth Alvarado's book, "Anxious Attachments," is a finalist for the Oregon Book Awards and was long-listed for the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Art of the Essay Award. "Jillian in the Borderlands: A Cycle of Rather Dark Tales," is forthcoming in 2020. Her earlier books are "Anthropologies: A Family Memoir" and "Not a Matter of Love" (Many Voices Prize). Beth lives in Bend, where she is core faculty at OSU-Cascades Low Residency MFA Program. She has just been awarded an Oregon Literary Career Fellowship.

Ellen’s essays, memoirs, interviews, and articles have appeared in Northwest Review, Marlboro Review, The Sun, Oregon Humanities, High Desert Journal, The Stay Project, youshare.com, The Polk Street Review, Oregon Home, Going Green, an anthology from the University of Oklahoma Press, and in “Dialogical,” a writing and art exhibit curated by Portland State University.

Ellen served as Writer-in-Residence at Central Oregon Community College, received Writer’s Residency Fellowships from Caldera and Soapstone, and is a featured reader, speaker, and panelist at academic and community venues in Oregon and in the Mid-West.
