Online Only: Imagining Your Way Through Crisis - Storytelling & the Tarot

Dr. Emily Carr  Event Type: Adult Program
Age Group(s): Adult
Date: 7/12/2020
Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Time: 4:00 PM
Description:
A workshop to take your writing to the next level with the Tarot.
Registered participants will receive a Zoom link the day before the program.

Learn how to access your creative ability in new ways, inject life and surprising stakes into your work, break through imaginative blocks, and write through (as opposed to going around) crisis using the Tarot. This workshop takes a deep dive into what the Tarot has to offer writers in these unprecedented times of pandemic, police brutality, and protest. This mixed-genre, all-levels workshop includes a basic introduction to the Tarot, generative writing exercises, storytelling tips and tricks, unique Tarot-inspired provocations for creativity in times of crisis, and a discussion of the various ways writers might use the Tarot in their work. This workshop is open to writers at all levels, working in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.

Participants will need something to write with and on.

Emily Carr writes murder mysteries that turn into love poems that are sometimes (by her McSweeney’s editors, for example) called divorce poems. After she got an MFA in poetry from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, she took a doctorate in ecopoetics at the University of Calgary. These days, she’s Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at the New College of Florida. Her McSweeney’s collection, "whosoever has let a minotaur enter them, or a sonnet--," inspired a beer of the same name, now available at the Ale Apothecary. Emily’s Tarot Romance, "Name Your Bird Without A Gun," is now available from Spork.
