Explore the origin of the Deschutes National Forest and the key roles and contributions it has played, and continues to play, in local history.

Explore the origin of the Deschutes National Forest and the key roles it has played and continues to play in Bend's and Central Oregon's history. After considering the vital role of the national forest's timber resources in sustaining Bend's timber-based economy for more than half a century, the contributions of it's water, forage, wildlife, recreation, and wilderness resources and their stewardship by the U.S. Forest Service and citizens are surveyed.

Les Joslin is regionally and nationally recognized wilderness educator and recipient of the U.S. Forest Service Chief's Wilderness Education Leadership Award. A retired U.S. Navy commander and a former U.S. Forest Service firefighter, wilderness ranger and staff officer, he is a graduate of San Jose State College and holds master's degrees from the University of Colorado and the University of London. He served fourteen seasons in the Three Sisters Wilderness. He is the author of a dozen published books.
