Hermit Crab essays borrow their forms from other kinds of communication (think personal ads, medical charts, syllabi, album liner notes). While this has become a popular form in creative nonfiction, the technique has applications for poetry and fiction as well. This workshop will feature some examples of Hermit Crab writing, provide some prompts to promote it, and will offer ideas for incorporating it into fiction, nonfiction, and poetry writing projects. We will do several writing "sprints" inspired by Hermit Crab prompts throughout the workshop.

Kristin Dorsey is a Professor in the Humanities Department at Central Oregon Community College. She's a generalist, which means that she teaches a variety of academic and creative writing classes, along with literature classes from Early American literature to Children's literature. She used to read and write a lot. And then she had twins. Now she hangs out at parks and sings a lot of silly songs. Teaching creative writing workshops in the community keeps her excited about her own writing and that of others.
