Settle in for winter storytelling, starting with a Greek myth of lovers transformed into kingfishers and the origin of "halcyon days" - golden times of happiness. Closer to home, learn about Indigenous tales of the Belted Kingfisher, like the origin of that cocky head crest.

You'll leave with a few tips on how to spot these jay-sized birds locally along rivers, listen for their rattling calls, and notice their marvelous fishing abilities - from hovers to headfirst plunges.

Nature writer Marina Richie is the author of the forthcoming book Halcyon Journey: In Search of the Belted Kingfisher (May 2022, Oregon State University Press). You can follow her bi-monthly blog on her website: www.marinarichie.com
